I have to start off by saying this is a pretty biased review. After all, I am a Black Cards fan. Not to mention, Pete Wentz is at the top of my list of people I look up to and every day Bebe Rexha climbs my list of people I adore and admire. I can promise though that in the very least this review will be honest, and it’s safe to say that last night in Central Park Black Cards lived up to Pete’s tweet early in the evening about being “light and fresh,” the perfect appetizer to a great line up.

It was the first time I’d seen them actually on stage (minus a couple of club performances around New York) since their tour with Travie last spring so initially the extra dancers and gimmicks were overwhelming. I wasn’t sure what to think and for a bit it was distracting, but just like the other fans there, eventually I got caught up in the fun of the music and really just enjoyed the show.

It’s obvious that Spencer loves what he does while he keeps the beat for everyone to dance to, Bebe’s energy is contagious and watching Pete jump around the stage and just have a blast never ceases to put a smile on my face. What I loved most was the freshness of the set list. It’s no secret that the sound of Black Cards has evolved somewhat since their beginning last year and we got to hear a lot more of that newer sound mixed in with favorites “Dominoes,” “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Fame,” and “Summer Nights” (with a surprise appearance by Shaggy).

If the much anticipated debut album sounds like the new songs we got to hear, which included the dance anthem “The City Never Sleeps,” our ears are all in for a real treat, our feet should get ready to dance, and the smiles are going to be plastered on our faces from having a good time.

As a Black Cards fan, I feel pretty damn proud right now. I feel like every time I get to see them perform they have gotten stronger as a band, more confident. While I still think that the extra gimmicks like silly string, streaming rolls of toilet paper and the extra dancers, aren’t needed, I can see that the band is really enjoying themselves, and as Pete pointed out during the set last night, that’s the whole point. Their music is to take your mind to a place where you can escape, let loose, and just have fun, where you can forget about whatever trouble may be plaguing you. For half an hour last night I did escape into that world and their set left a smile on my face and only made me want more.
